The Marketing program is taught by Mrs. Kerry Henley. She is in her 12th year of teaching and is a graduate from Sweet Springs High School, Saline County Career Center (marketing), State Fair Community College, University of Central Missouri-Warrensburg, and Lindenwood University-St. Charles, Missouri. After graduating from UCM, Mrs. Henley taught for five years as a high school English teacher, three years as a business teacher, and is on her fourth year teaching marketing at SCCC.
This year is the second year of a four-year marketing program at SCCC:
Fundamentals of Marketing (9-12 prerequisite)
Virtual Business Marketing Matters (10-12 second year)
Advanced Marketing (11-12 combined class)
The Marketing Work-Study Program (optional *must take a marketing class in order to complete)
Fundamentals of Marketing reflects the current demands of the business world. It provides students with the basic business concepts to compete successfully in the global economic market place and gain employment in a marketing occupation. The next level is Virtual Business Marketing Matters. This is a new course. VB Marketing Matters uses virtual business simulations in different areas of business to help students learn what areas a particular business needs to focus on. These areas include sports & entertainment, fashion, hospitality & hotel along with an emphasis on personal finance. Advanced Marketing is the upper level course that teaches students about marketing and management. Students will learn advanced marketing concepts such as business administration, finance, product management, selling, promotion, distribution, communications, economics, international marketing, and human relation skills especially working in a team environment.
Students enrolled in any marketing class at SCCC can choose to enroll in the marketing work program. Students must work at least ten hours per week to receive credit. The primary purpose of this course is to assist students in making career choices and to assist in the transition from school to work through supervised work experience.
DECA is a big part of our curriculum in marketing and is our CTSO for marketing. DECA is a marketing organization for high school students, which prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs to be college and career ready. DECA provides students with many opportunities to reach out to the community, work with community leaders, help with community service activities, research different careers, and promote different organizations. The SCCC DECA chapter has been very successful over the last few years. The chapter has gone to international competition for the last thirteen years, been recognized as a thrive status chapter (highest), continues to grow, and remains one of the top chapters in their district.
Along with preparing for competition, the SCCC DECA chapter has created a sponsorship package called Dough4DECA created by students as a DECA project and is a huge source of fundraising for the chapter. This is a true testament to the hands-on approach students learn while being a part of the marketing program. Dough4DECA is an advertising package that businesses can choose their level of sponsorship and receive different advertising services available only through the SCCC DECA chapter. It has helped raise the majority of the cost for students to attend the international competition for the last four years. Students are responsible for revising the package and reaching out to businesses following the sales process, which is taught in advanced marketing.
November is DECA month and SCCC DECA has several activities planned in order to promote the chapter. For more information on the SCCC DECA chapter, please check our social media @scccdeca on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
