Dear Parent/Guardian:

We will be having class meetings during the school day this upcoming week with each grade level to discuss important points from our handbook. Please feel free to discuss these points with your child. Additional details on these topics can be found in our BMS handbook, which is located online on the Bueker Middle School webpage’s "Student Resources" tab.

Arrival to School:  All students will enter through the gym doors, which open at 7:15 A.M. Please cross at a crosswalk for safety purposes. Our school day begins at 7:45 A.M.

Late Arrival/Tardiness: Late arrival in the morning and/or tardiness between classes could result in disciplinary action. Middle school students will be allowed two (2) tardies per quarter before disciplinary action takes place. After receiving the 3rd tardy the following disciplinary action will apply:

● 3 tardies = 1 After School Detention

● 4 tardies = 2 After School Detentions

● 5 tardies and over = In School Suspension for each incident

The tardy policy is based on each academic quarter and students will begin each quarter with no tardies.

Dismissal: We release at 3:05 P.M.  Please discuss with your child if they will ride the bus, walk, or be a car rider. Buses load/unload on the south side of the building. Car riders can be picked up on the east and west sides of the building. Please do not block the alley way.

School Work: We encourage them to stay organized with their schoolwork. Our homework policy is as follows-20% off if one day late, 50% off if two or more days late.

Character: We treat all staff and students with respect. We utilize character cards and positive office referrals (Student Shout Outs) for outstanding behavior.

MPS Behavior Matrix:   A committee of teachers, staff, and administrators have created a behavior matrix that outlines expectations in each area of the building. We will review and ask students to be aware of how others are acting, and report any actions that do not follow our matrix.

Field Trips:  Students may be required to have a 90% attendance rate and meet all disciplinary guidelines in order to participate in field trips.

Cell Phones: Cell phones/electronics must be turned off and put away into the classroom’s designated area upon entering any classroom throughout the school day, or kept in lockers all day. Cell phones/Electronics must not be heard nor seen during instructional time. If a cell phone is out or is heard (i.e. ring, alarm, vibration) during instructional time, the discipline policy is enforced. If a student leaves class to use the restroom, they will keep their phone in the classroom for the duration that they are out of class.

Social Media: We encourage them to keep their passwords private, and do not send/post anything that you don’t want everyone to see or anything that will interfere with the educational process.

Dress Code: Dress/grooming is the responsibility of the student and parent/guardian. Most common dress code concerns: no house shoes/slippers, clothing that does not cover undergarments, clothing that does not reach to mid-thigh, hats, hoods worn up,  low-cut/bare midriff/spaghetti straps, and sunglasses (a full list can be found in the BMS handbook).

Other: We will also go over hallway expectations, lunch procedures, keeping lockers organized, and other details to help students be successful.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to our Assistant Principals, Meghan Tichenor and Falon Bossaller, or myself. We look forward to working with you to support your student’s education!

Sincerely,

Travis Reid-BMS Principal
